I Am Domestic Violence

With nothing but a rack of coats and blouses, Wambui becomes seven different people — proving domestic violence crosses every line of race, class, and age. The audience laughs. Then they go quiet. Then they go get help.

The Show

Seven characters. One truth.

Domestic violence does not belong to one kind of person, one income bracket, or one neighborhood. In I Am Domestic Violence, Wambui Bahati steps into seven distinctly different characters — using nothing but a rack of coats and blouses to transform — to show an audience just how far the truth reaches.

The audience laughs at one moment and goes completely silent the next. That is the power of theatre: it lets people see something familiar in an entirely new way. After one college performance, the counseling office reported a measurable rise in student appointments — proof that what happens in the room doesn't stay in the room.
